capt edward grant riesCaptain Edward Grant Ries, USMC passed away, Tuesday, March 29th, after a valiant battle against cancer.

Ed was known to many in the Southern California Scottish Community, and served as the convener for Clan Wallace for many years. For several years, he served as part of the Color Guard in the Salute to Veterans at Scottish Fest USA, over Memorial Day weekend, at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, where he will be accorded honors this year.

Ed wrote several excellent historical novels over the past few years, all of which are available through Amazon. He held a PhD in engineering, and taught at university level, as well as working in the private sector.

His first book was entitled ‘Legacy of Honor’; a fitting one, for such a gallant gentleman.

Ed was a devoted husband, father, and friend.

A church service was held Saturday, and a funeral internment ceremony took take place Thursday, April 7th at 1:00 PM at Miramar National Cemetery, section 9 site 561.

I purchased Legacy of Honor and Trial of Honor several years ago at the Las Vegas Highland Games. It has taken me some time to get the time to read them and they blew me away! Now I wish that I had bought all the books they had with them, meaning the son and widow of Captain Ries.
They are very well written, and I am sure he put in a great amount of research.
I am married to a Marine and think it would have been amazing to have met Captain Ries!

I worked with Ed at several events over the past 20 years and may be able to help. It looks like you need the last four books in the series. If you are indeed interested in the remaining books by Ed, I have copies of the next three books.

Book six was available on-line only. Here’s a link to the sixth book, Song of Honor. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33216162-song-of-honor.

I’m trying so hard to find that book with no luck any suggestions? Do you have a copy?

I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Captain Reis in 2014 or 2015 [can’t remember] while at the Costa Mesa Scottish Games. I found we had a mutual love of all things Scottish. He was selling his first five books at a booth in one of the pavilions. I bought all five and he graciously inscribed each one. I thoroughly enjoyed the books and am rereading them at present. I tried on a couple of occasions to see if he had another one out, but no luck until today when I made another attempt to see if he had completed another book. Apparently, he finished a sixth book, “Song of Honor.” I have tried to find a copy, but to no avail. I would love to find it to complete my set. It was a wonderful series. Being a retired Marine officer myself, I will miss him and his books!

I loved Ed and he trained me when i was going into the Navy as Civilian DOD. I ended up doing the work for over 20 years.
Thank you Ed for your guidance and your love. I miss you and i miss working with you at Highland Games. I was sorry that i was not able to attend the funeral. I did ask Disneyland to do a flag ceremony in your name and they did with tons of active duty and veterans there with me. I did finally visit your grave last month and could not take myself away from you. You will be dearly missed and i will continue to help veterans and not retire.

Please express our belated expression of sympathy to Edward Ries”s family. It was an honor to meet Edward at a Day of the Tartan at Balboa Park, buying his first book there. We were traveling to Scotland that year so we enjoyed all the sights in William Wallace country all the more after the great information that he shared with us about the Wallace Clan. And, yes we fell in love with Scotland and hope to return. God bless you all. Jake and Marlys Mantel
